GM Unveils First Airbag Central
General Motors has announced that from next year will integrate the first front-central airbag industry, specially designed to protect the driver and passenger in a side impact. These new airbags, developed in collaboration with Takata, deploy from the inner side of the driver’s seat to receive a considerable impact on one side of the vehicle, creating a projection screen that limits the driver’s side, and what perhaps even more importantly, prevents contact can be made between the heads of driver and passenger.
The safety belt use may limit the chances of a dangerous header during a capsize accident, but this new airbag directly mitigate its effects by creating a barrier cushion between the heads of occupants in preserving as much as possible integrity of their skulls.
GM will begin to integrate their front-central airbag in their SUV for North America, beginning with the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse 2013.Presumably, later extended to other models and markets.
